Hello Neighbors

Happy 4th of July and the celebration of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Written in 1789 and amended 27 times in the years to come, the Constitution provided greater detail including the Bill of Rights. I found it interesting to review the history of these documents. I hope you do too.

One article below addresses antennas that Lake County Public Works Department plans to mount on the top railing of the County water tower.  The antennas are about five feet tall, just like the arrangements on three other County water towers. The article below provides good information.

I am calling this out because in 2017, a cell tower company requested use of Lake County Forest Preserves District land for a 100 foot + pole. The neighbors rejected the plan mainly because it was intrusive and unsightly. The five foot antennas are completely different and commonplace on County watertowers.

The Lake County Board, the Stormwater Commission, a number of villages, the Lake County Forest Preserves District Cook County and many entities are concerned about the effect of Foxconn and other developments in Wisconsin. We all have asked the Wisconsin EPA to follow its own regulations, a number of which have been waived.  All of the organizations noted plus the State of Illinois and the US Army Corps of Engineers have invested millions of dollars in Des Plaines River flood mitigation. Please call or write your State and US legislators if you share our concerns.

Please take time to review the articles below. I chose them for you because of timeliness, importance and opportunities for fun.

I hope you have an enjoyable midsummer holiday week.  Please call or email me about any of these articles or other issues or concerns.

Countryside Lake Water Tower Improvements

Countryside Manor water tower

In August, the Lake County Board will be considering a proposal to install antenna equipment on the Countryside Lake Water Tower.  This is a routine proposal to install antenna equipment similar in size and scope to equipment mounted on other Lake County Public Works water towers. The partnership allows Verizon Wireless the opportunity to enhance cellular service in the area, with minimal visual impact.  Additionally, revenue generated through the proposed lease agreement with Verizon Wireless would be used toward the maintenance of water and sewage systems maintained by the Lake County Public Works Department.  Please contact the project manager, Daniel Salgado, at 847-377-7152 if you would like additional information.

2018 Water Quality Reports Available

Lake County Public Works is committed to providing safe water throughout the County. As strong supporters of the Safe Drinking Water Act, Public Works releases annual water quality Consumer Confidence Reports (CCRs) for the 12 water systems they own and operate. These reports describe the sources, treatment, and chemical analysis of each water distribution system. All Lake County systems passed testing requirements for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Visit the water quality reports web page to read your report.

LCFPD bald eagles

The Baldies are Back in Town
You’ll find bald eagles soaring high in the sky, slowly flapping over water, perched in trees, or even on the ground. Look for them near rivers, lakes, marshes and shorelines. Bald eagles mainly eat fish, but also hunt mammals, waterfowl and carrion. Young eagles attain their white head feathers after about five years, so don’t rule out the possibility that giant brown bird overhead is a baldy. Look for a bright yellow, hooked bill and mottled white feathers on the body.

Nests are built near the trunk, high in the tree but below the crown. The diameter of a nest is typically 5 to 6 feet; height ranges from 2 to 4 feet. The nest may be reused (and added to) for years. We’ve confirmed a few local nests in recent years, including this one photographed in April in southwestern Lake County. Send us an email and let us know if you see an active nest while out exploring your preserves.

Stormwater Management Commission News

Recently, the Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) submitted its annual facility inspection report to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency on behalf of Lake County. This report is a yearly requirement for Lake County’s National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, which covers Lake County’s municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4s) discharge activities, provides monitoring and reporting requirements, and defines measurable goals for water quality protection. For more information, visit the website and the annual report.
