Illinois State Board of Elections’ Objection Hearing Appeal Delays Voting

WAUKEGAN, Illinois - Lake County Clerk Carla N. Wyckoff announced today that an Illinois State Board of Elections Electoral Board decision that has been appealed is still being reviewed by the court. The review involves an objection originally filed against an Illinois attorney general candidate. Only after this objection appeal has been resolved can the state send a final certified candidate list to all Illinois election authorities. As a result, in-person early voting at the Clerk’s office and voting by mail throughout the entire state of Illinois will be delayed.

By state law, in-person early voting at the Clerk’s office and voting by mail should begin February 8. But without state certification of the candidates, ballots cannot be printed.

“Based on delay projections from the Illinois State Board of Elections, I am anticipating ballots to be ready about February 16,” says Wyckoff. “We have already begun preparing Lake County’s ballots for all other candidates and public questions. When our office receives final candidate certification, we have printing and testing resources on standby who will work quickly to make ballots available to the voters. If ballots become ready earlier than anticipated, such notice will be distributed through the media, local governmental offices, social media, and our website.”

It is anticipated that all 15 of Lake County’s early voting sites will be open as scheduled on March 5, 2018. Visit LakeCountyClerk.info to find the early voting locations and hours. Election Day voting will not be impacted by this certification delay.
