Updated Information: The contractor has changed the date for the start of this closure to begin on Aug. 21. The road is still expected to be open by Sept. 1 as originally planned.
Grayslake, IL - The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) will be
closing Center Street, between IL 83 and Atkinson Road, to replace the large
culvert just east of IL 83 in Grayslake. The heavy flash flooding on July 12-13
in Grayslake undermined the culvert leading to a partial collapse of the
pavement. This culvert was on schedule to be replaced in 2018, but after
evaluating the impact from the flash flooding, this culvert will need to be
replaced this year.
Immediately following the flood, LCDOT completed a temporary
repair of the pavement and lowered the weight limits for the road. A mobile
traffic monitoring camera was installed at the site so that engineers could
monitor the road condition remotely. This was done to keep the road open as
long as possible while design and engineering plans were developed and construction activities were coordinated. Now that all of the pieces are in place, a
full road closure is necessary to replace the culvert.
The closure will begin on Aug. 21, and is expected to open on
Sept. 1, 2017. Crews will begin with removing the old culvert, then they will
install the new culvert, and finally replace the pavement to open the road.
