7/20/2017 11 a.m. Emergency Management Partners Update

Current Conditions

We are watching weather forecasts closely. The rainfall last night brought an average of 1.2 inches to Lake County. The primary concern right now is the heavy rainfall forecast through Saturday. The NWS reports that although localized flooding is possible tonight, the threat of flooding/flash flooding will increase into Friday and ongoing river flooding could worsen into the weekend. There is uncertainty on the location of the storms. While additional rain will cause river levels to slowly rise, we don't expect to exceed previous crest levels.

Sandbags
With rain in the forecast through the weekend, we recommend communities do NOT remove sandbags from designated locations and to keep all preventative measures in place!

Fox River/Chain O'Lakes
The current elevation of the Fox River at New Munster, WI is in Minor Flood stage at 12.83 and has held around this elevation for the past several hours. The Fox River at New Munster crested at a record flooding elevation of 17.47 on July 13.

The current elevation of the Chain O’Lakes at the Fox Lake - Lake Villa gauge is in Major Flood stage at 7.66 and starting rising again around 6 am. The Chain O’Lakes at the Fox Lake – Lake Villa gauge crested at a record flooding elevation of 8.04 on July 17.

Levels along the lower Fox River are slowly rising.

Des Plaines River
The Des Plaines River gauge at Russell has slowed its recession and is currently at 8.76, within Minor flood stage. A record flooding elevation of 12.15 occurred at this location on July 14.

The Des Plaines River gauge at Gurnee has been rising since 7 am and is currently within Moderate flood stage at 10.0. A record flooding elevation of 12.09 occurred at this location on July 16.

The Des Plaines River gauge at Lincolnshire has been rising since 5:30 am and is currently within Moderate flood state at 14.7. A record flooding elevation of 16.53 occurred at this location on July 13.

North Branch Chicago River
Levels along the North Branch Chicago River rose between 2 to 3 feet from the recent rainfall and have crested already or will crest later today.

Mosquitoes

Mosquito protection

Flooding will result in an increase in mosquitoes. Floodwater mosquitoes are likely to reach nuisance levels about a week after flooding, but these mosquitoes are not carriers of the West Nile virus. As floodwaters recede and the weather dries out, Culex mosquitoes, which are the primary carriers of West Nile virus, are likely to increase in population. Learn more at fightthebitenow.com.
