Assumed Business Name Filings

Puppy

An assumed business name allows an owner to title a business with something other than his/her personal name. To protect the consumer, all individuals, sole proprietors, or general partnerships operating in Lake County with an assumed business name are required to register with our office.

For example: Beth sets up a dog-grooming business in Libertyville, and she chooses to name her business “The Dog Wash.”  This title is considered an assumed business name, and Beth will submit her completed Assumed Business Name application form to our office and publish the required legal notices. She will also contact her village officials for any local licensing requirements before opening her business. Now, a customer, Robert, has a complaint about the service he received and wants to talk to the business owner but doesn’t know who that is. Robert can obtain the business owner’s name and contact information from the filing in our office.

A legal business name is required on all government forms, application for employer tax IDs, licenses, business checking account, and a business phone listing.

Proper branding of an assumed business name can be a powerful marketing tool. Pick a great name, and make your dream a reality by opening your own business.

2016 Property Tax Bills

In early May, the Treasurer’s office will mail the 2016 Lake County property tax bills. The two installment payments are due June 6 and September 6 and can be made in-person, at selected banks, by mail, online, by phone, or electronically. For payment option information, visit the Treasurer’s website.

While it’s too late to protest your 2016 bill, check the Treasurer’s website for tax relief or exemption program eligibility for your 2017 and future tax bills.

A Hint of History – Lake County Clerk James C. Biddlecom

Biddlecom Mansion

We couldn’t find a portrait of James C. Biddlecom, Lake County’s second county clerk (1854-1865), but those traveling through Waukegan can still see his Genesee Street home built in 1872.

James was born in Oneida County, New York and lived there until he married Harriet Pratt. The newlyweds were some of Lake County’s earliest settlers when they moved to a farm in the town of Newport. A year later, the couple then relocated to Waukegan. James Biddlecom served as Lake County Clerk for twelve years and helped found the First National Bank of Waukegan.

Visit the City of Waukegan’s landmark website for more history of this grand Italianate-style beauty.
