Making your Write-in Vote Count

To ensure that your write-in vote is counted, clearly print the candidate’s name on the designated line and completely darken the oval to the left. Even though any minor variation of the candidate’s name is acceptable, it is important your spelling is clear enough for the election judges to recognize your intent.

Number of votes allowed

Carefully read your ballot as you are limited to selecting a specific number of candidates in each race. Some offices limit you to choosing only one candidate; other races permit as many as four selections. If you vote for more than allowed in any one race, your vote for that race is considered an overvote and will not be counted. Your choices marked in the remaining races will be tabulated.

After the polls close on election night, the election judges will hand-count votes for the valid write-in candidates, and tallies will be posted on the clerk’s website within seven days. To be a valid write-in candidate, an applicant must have previously filed the required Declaration of Intent to be a Write-in Candidate form with the clerk’s office. Votes for fictional characters or undeclared candidates will not be counted. Per Illinois law, election results are not final until 14 days after Election Day allowing for late arriving mailed ballots and the processing of provisional ballots.

A complete candidate list for the April 4th election, including the names of the 34 write-in candidates, is available at LakeCountyClerk.info under the “April 4 Consolidated” icon.
