Lake County State's Attorney's Office Hosts National Crime Victims' Rights Essay Contest for Youth

(Lake County, IL March 06, 2017) The Office of Lake County State's Attorney Michael G. Nerheim is hosting an essay contest in conjunction with its National Crime Victims' Rights Week program.

The program is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at the College of Lake County Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington Street in Grayslake. The program will commence at 6pm. Resource tables will be available for the public beginning at 5:30pm. This year's National Crime Victims' Rights theme is Strength. Resilience. Justice.

Any student who has been a victim of a crime is invited to nominate someone who served as a "hero", helping them regain strength, resilience, and/or justice during this time. The selected essay will be featured during the aforementioned Victims' Rights Week program, and their nominee will be recognized.

The requirements to submit an essay are as follows:

  • Must be a high school student in any Lake County school district
  • Essay should be between 750 and 1,000 words in length
  • Entries must be received by 5 p.m. on March 22nd
  • The essay should discuss the person who helped the student, not what happened to the student.
  • Essays will be evaluated on content-integration of one or more of the themes: strength, resilience, justice   and a clear explanation of how the nominee helped the student gain one or more of these qualities.

Entries should be emailed to sbankston@lakecountyil.gov. The words "Essay Contest" should be placed in the subject line. In addition, essays must be received by 5 p.m. on March 22nd. For questions, please contact Sandra Bankston at (847) 377-3184.
