2017 Elections

February 28, 2017 Consolidated Primary Election

City of Waukegan and Waukegan Township residents will nominate their city mayor, city clerk, and township highway commissioner candidates. Only voters in these two districts are eligible to vote in this primary. Visit our February election page to find registration options, voting site information, or to request a ballot by mail.

April 4, 2017 Consolidated General Election

All Lake County citizens will elect their county-wide officials which include school board members, municipal officers, township representatives, park district commissioners, and library district trustees. The successful candidates will take office, approve budgets, authorize expenditures, determine school agendas, and consent to district programs which influence your property tax bill.

Historically, Lake County's odd-year consolidated elections have had a very low voter turnout. In April 2015, 11.36% of Lake County voters went to the polls, and 17.74% registered citizens voted in April 2013.  We are encouraging all Lake County citizens to be informed voters. Research your candidates and vote in the April election.  April's candidate list and referenda.

A Hint of Our History

Voter Registration Card

The Clerk’s office recently came across an old voter registration card. While there is no date on the card itself, we can estimate that it was printed between 1940 and 1950 as this is the time period Jay B. Morse served as County Clerk.

Mr. Morse was born in Lake County and lived here nearly all his life.  His public service career was extensive and overlapping as he served first as deputy county clerk from 1910 to 1927, Libertyville’s village president from 1917 to 1923, and then as county treasurer from 1927 to 1938, all the while operating a clothing store in Libertyville from 1905 to 1940.

In June 1913, Illinois approved women's right to vote. The next month, there was an election in Libertyville for the designation of the new town hall. Daisy Morse, Jay’s wife, gathered a group of women to go to the polls with her, and they were among the first women to vote in Lake County. She was quoted in the newspaper: "My husband told me not to vote, but you see I am here."

Unpaid 2016 Property Taxes

With a few exceptions, payment for unpaid 2016 Lake County property tax bills will be collected at the County Clerk’s office instead of the Treasurer’s office. Payment must be made in full using cash, certified check, or money order. Partial payments are not permissible by state statute.

Overdue tax bills were sold to tax buyers at an auction late last year, but property owners have almost two years to pay their bill and redeem their assets. While Illinois law prevents the tax buyer from taking immediate possession of the property after the auction, the tax buyer will add penalty fees and interest to the original bill until full payment is made.

For more tax payer and redemption information, see our Frequently Asked Questions web page.
