Chairman Lawlor Recognizes Sauer's Service; Seeks Applications for District 17 Board Vacancy

Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor is seeking qualified candidates to fill the District 17 county board seat being vacated by Nick Sauer, who was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives (Dist. 51). Sauer submitted a letter of resignation to Chairman Lawlor on Dec. 21 stating he will step down from the Lake County Board on Jan. 11, 2017 to coincide with taking the oath of office as Illinois State Representative.

In submitting his letter of resignation, Representative-Elect Sauer wrote, “I am immensely grateful to the voters and residents of District 17 for allowing me the opportunity to be their voice in county government for the past four years. The bi-partisan accomplishments and common-sense policies our county board has enacted give me great pride and inspire me to continue to serve the public with optimism and determination.”

According to State Statute (10 ILCS 5/25-11), the Lake County Board Chairman shall appoint someone to fill the vacancy within 60 days with the advice and consent of the county board.

“I am proud to count Nick as a colleague, friend and now State Representative-Elect. I look forward to continuing to work with him as he takes his place on the frontline of the fight to save Illinois from out of control spending, a broken property tax system and job killing regulations,” Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor said. “We are looking for committed leaders who are passionate about serving others and want to help shape an even brighter future for Lake County, including the 17th District. If that sounds like you, submit an application to fill the District 17 vacancy.”

State law requires that the appointee must be:

"A legal voter," meaning the individual is at least 18 years of age and holds a valid voter registration and has committed no acts which have permanently revoked his right to vote or temporarily revoked voting right during the appointed term of office (10 ILCS 5/3-1 et seq.)

- A resident of Lake County for at least one year preceding the next election (November 26, 2018)

- Of the same political party of the vacating official, when he was elected

The appointee shall serve the remainder of the term, which will expire in 2018. The appointee must also be a resident of District 17, which includes Island Lake, Lake Barrington, Port Barrington, North Barrington, Barrington Hills, Tower Lakes, Fox River Grove, unincorporated Barrington, and portions of Wauconda and Hawthorn Woods. (View exact boundaries of District 17). In this case, the chairman will appoint a Republican to fill this vacancy.

Chairman Lawlor added, “Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to be a responsive and effective representative of District 17 and a collaborative, diligent contributor and colleague on the county board.  I am looking forward to facilitating a process that encourages a variety of candidates to apply with different personal and professional backgrounds from around the district. Input from District 17 leaders and residents, and other key stakeholders will also be valuable as I put forward a name for consideration.”

If necessary, the chairman will convene the " Ad Hoc Chairman's Advisory Committee for the District 17 County Board Vacancy" no earlier than the week of January 9th, and may occur as late as the week of January 16th.

Residents of District 17 who are interested in serving on the Lake County Board, and meet the criteria, are encouraged to submit their resume and letter of interest to countyboard@lakecountyil.gov, or mail to:

Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor
Lake County Board Office, 10th Fl.
18 North County St.
Waukegan, IL 60085

The deadline for accepting applications is the close of business on Jan. 12, 2017. Interviews of candidates may be scheduled as soon as January 13 and conclude as soon as practical.

Also, there are many opportunities for residents to serve in leadership roles other than the District 17 County Board vacancy.  Residents who are interested in serving their communities in an appointed leadership role are encouraged to visit the County Board’s website and apply for one of the nearly 300 volunteer positions on 70 different boards, commissions, committees and units of government that are appointed by the County Board Chairman.
