Hello Neighbors

This newsletter gives you a number of indoor/outdoor entertainment options - active and passive.  I've also added a reminder that the second payment for our property tax is due September 2nd.

Mental Health/Mental Illness is a major issue - for individuals, families, friends and neighbors.  The topic and ways to better address the issue is beginning to see the light of day with some significant progress underway.  There is a growing understanding that we can address a host of problems/issues by first addressing mental health.  Under Sheriff Ray Rose and I have discussed the implications - more below.

Recently a resident asked about appropriate disposal of various "hazardous waste" materials and items.  I told him that I also have several boxes of hazardous "stuff" in the garage and need to know what, where and when to dispose of it all.  See below.

I hope you will find this information to be useful and informative.  Please contact me by phone or email if you have questions or concerns.

Regards,

Lake County Leaders Announce Initiative to Address Mental Health Crisis

Lake County, along with our nation and local communities, is facing a mental health crisis that affects the individual, families, friends, neighbors, veterans, employers, schools, hospitals, the criminal justice system, and more.

To address this growing problem and strengthen mental health services across the county, Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor and the Honorable Susan Garrett (former IL State Senator, 29th District) will lead a new community-wide initiative focusing on data-sharing and evidence-based practices to identify gaps and recommend a sustainable continuum of care for this vulnerable population. P.S  The Lake County Sheriff's Department has a great deal of interest in Mental Health/Illness issues and has implemented a significant training initiative to help make first responses most effective for each situation.  I congratulated Under Sheriff Ray Rose recently  after his team safely talked down a troubled man poised to jump to his death.

Individuals with mental illness account for a large portion of the people who move through the judicial system and are often housed at the Lake County Jail.  The collaborative effort with partners across the county is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do to unclog the judicial system and provide more efficient and effective mental health services while decreasing the jail population and related costs.

Dispose Your Prescription Drugs Properly at A Disposal Box Near You

If you have prescription drugs that need to be thrown out, do it the safe and responsible way. As part of International Overdose Awareness Day, which is Aug. 31, municipal police departments across Lake County want residents to be aware of the disposal boxes available. The Lake County Underage Drinking and Drug Prevention Task Force disposal program in partnership with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County collected nearly 12,000 pounds of prescription medicine with an estimated street value of $750,000 in 2015. Find a prescription drug disposal box near you

Recycling Information: What, Where, When

We have several boxes of hazardous "stuff" in our garage - ready for recycling (where/when").  By coincidence, a resident called and asked what to do with his various types of waste.  I promised to provide more information.

From time to time, this newsletter includes information about  "special events" for recycling.  Yet, questions remain about what to do each week, or how to deal with the "old" computer, cables and CFL bulbs that were no longer needed.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) provide helpful guidance about what you may/may not put out for your weekly pickup and a handy tool (an alphabet of items/stuff) that provides information about what, when and where.  Take a tour of the website www.swalco.org to answer your questions.  If you still need assistance, you may contact SWALCO at  847-336-9340 or 847-377-4950.
