I am excited about the kickoff of televising our Finance Committee meetings starting on Wednesday August 3rd at 1pm. You can watch this broadcast live from the 10th floor in Waukegan online or later on LCTV. After much debate over the past several years we finally received approval mostly because of the leadership and persistence of my fellow Board Member Sandy Hart of Lake Bluff.
Actions taken by the Lake County Board Committees (Public Works & Transportation, Planning Building & Zoning, Law & Judicial, Revenue Records & Legislation, and Health & Community Services) then channels through the Finance Committee prior to full Lake County Boards final action. Most of the real action and debate takes place at our Committee meetings. While there was some concern the Finance meetings could take longer if televised, with possibly a little more detail on some items, there should be very little change in how we normally operate.
Along with us shedding more light for the public to see what we do here at Committee, I am also excited about the press being able to tune in since they have rarely attend these meetings. It is very important for the public to know how we deal with issues individually and as a group so you can weigh in and express your thoughts to us. I know this new practice can promote better communications, but you need to participate to make that Happen. Please Watch!
A mosquito pool sampled June 23 in Highland Park
has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first confirmed indicator of the
disease’s presence in Lake County this year. In 2015, five human cases of
West Nile virus were reported in Lake County. You can report areas of stagnant
water which are conducive to mosquito breeding by calling the Lake County
Health Department’s West Nile virus hotline at 847-377-8300. View signs
and symptoms.

 To
address the growing number of Lake County residents struggling with opioid
addiction, the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is
doubling the capacity of its Medication Assisted Treatment program. Treatment
will be expanded to 200 people through a $325,000 grant from the Health
Resources and Services Administration.
The
need for this service has increased, as the number of substance abuse related
deaths in Lake County have tripled in the past 20 years. Through this
grant, the County plans to enhance the program and reduce the number of
overdose deaths. The funds will provide medications, increase medical provider
hours, add substance abuse counselors and a licensed clinical social worker. Watch this video to learn more about the expansion of the MAT
program.

In an effort to help address the serious and
growing drug addiction problem in our communities, Lake County, SWALCO,
and local law enforcement have partnered on a program that allows people to
drop off controlled substances at local
police departments. These drugs often include opioids, such as
heroin, morphine, and prescription pain relievers. Watch our latest Dirty Jobs
episode as Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor participates in the delivery,
sorting and disposal process.
