News from the Lake County Clerk

June 2016

It’s the season for love

Marriage and civil union licenses

Summer is usually a busy time for marriages and civil unions, and this year is no exception. Couples planning a ceremony in Lake County must apply for a license in-person and together at the Clerk’s office.  Both applicants must be free to marry, be 18 years of age, and present valid identification. A marriage or civil union license is valid one day after it’s issued, is valid for 60 days, and can only be used in Lake County.

If there was a death, dissolution, or annulment of a previous legal relationship, the applicant must provide the date, county, and state of the event. If the occurrence was in the last six months, the County Clerk's office must see a certified copy of the record.

For those couples with busy schedules, the office is open until 7 pm on Fridays – except for Fridays before a holiday when the office closes at 5 pm.

Fees
$35 for license application
$10 for first certified copy
$4 for each additional certified copy

Visit our website for more information and Friday night schedule.

County Clerk Wyckoff

Clerk Wyckoff was the guest presenter at a recent meeting of the Lake County (IL) Genealogical Society. About 40 members attended the evening meeting to learn about all the county’s public records available to those researching their family history.

Automatic voter registration

On May 31, 2016, Senate Bill 250, also known as Government Agency Voter Registration, was passed by both houses of the Illinois General Assembly.

U.S. citizens living in Illinois will be able to automatically register to vote when conducting business with participating state agencies that include the Office of the Secretary of State, Human Services, Healthcare and Family Services, Employment Security, or Aging.

The public agencies collect the required information that is necessary for completing a voter registration form and collaborate with the Board of Elections to automatically register these applicants.

The collected information is then sent to the county clerk who checks against other records to verify eligibility or update existing files.

Governor Bruce Rauner has 60 days to sign this bill into law, to veto it or to do nothing, in which case the bill becomes law.  If and when SB250 takes effect, Illinois could be the sixth state to pass automatic voter registration.
