LCDOT Opens 5th Roundabout in Lake County

Lake Barrington, IL - The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) has opened the new roundabout at River Road and Roberts Road. This is the 5th roundabout in Lake County. In many locations, roundabouts provide safer and more efficient traffic flow than standard intersections and they are a key component of the Lake County highway system. While there is still finishing work to do on the project, the roundabout is now open to motorists.

Navigating the River and Roberts Roundabout:
This new roundabout is the first multi-lane roundabout in Lake County. As motorists approach the roundabout, they must think ahead and make sure they select the correct lane as they enter the roundabout. This video focuses specifically on the River Road and Roberts Road Roundabout and illustrates the different movements drivers can make.

Thank you for your patience!
LCDOT would like to thank you for your patience during this final road closure - we know it was difficult. The construction contract allowed for 20 calendar days for the Roberts Road closure and roundabout construction. LCDOT anticipated that this closure would be disruptive to traffic so we worked very closely with the contractor to move quickly. Thanks to the construction team for their dedication to the timeline we were able to open the roundabout in 12 days!

Project Background:
LCDOT began to study the River Road and Roberts Road intersection in 2008. This intersection was experiencing significant congestion in the morning and evening rush hours, with heavy traffic coming from the west in the morning and returning in the evening.  At the time the study began, traffic counts showed more than 20,000 vehicles passing through the intersection every day.

As with all projects, LCDOT went through an extensive review and evaluated all of the possible scenarios for this intersection. Based on safety and performance, a roundabout was the preferred option. Coordination with the Forest Preserve allowed for incorporation of a new trail and trail crossing, as well as water quality enhancement benefits to the watershed. And finally, LCDOT was able to take advantage of Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to help with the cost of construction.

Roundabouts in Lake County:
Navigating a roundabout is easy – and since traffic moves in only one direction, there are less severe crashes and traffic flows smoothly. Follow along with Bill and Ryan from LCDOT as they show you how to drive a roundabout, and teach you why they are safer, and more efficient for drivers. This video also includes tips for pedestrians and cyclists.
