WAUKEGAN TEACHER CHARGED
(LAKE COUNTY, ILLINOIS October 16, 2015) On October 15th, 2015 the Waukegan Police Department and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office began a joint investigation involving a music teacher. The music teacher is employed by District #60 at Webster Middle School in Waukegan, Illinois.
The investigation began when a concerned parent contacted the police department about inappropriate texting between a student and the music teacher. Detectives from the Waukegan Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division interviewed the music teacher. The music teacher began to reveal details about a separate inappropriate relationship with a different minor. The original texting incident is still under investigation.
The music teacher has been identified as Briana Travis, 33 years old, of the 100 block of Walnut Court in Mundelein, Illinois. It is alleged that Travis was involved in an inappropriate sexual relationship with the minor victim. Travis and the minor victim allegedly began the inappropriate relationship at the end of the 2014 / 2015 school year. Travis and the minor victim continued the inappropriate relationship through the summer of 2015, until Travis’ arrest on October 15th, 2015.
On October 16th, 2015 Travis appeared in Lake County Court in front of the Honorable Judge George Strickland. Travis has been charged with three counts of Criminal Sexual Assault (Class 1 felony). Travis’ next court appearance is scheduled for November 3rd, 2015 at 1:30pm in C-120. Travis is currently being held in the custody of the Lake County Illinois Jail in lieu of a $1,000,000 bond.
