How to Make Sure Your Property is Assessed Fairly!

Step 1

When you get your blue assessment notice in the mail, make sure you are being accurately assessed for the right square footage and other property features.

Step 2

Visit assessor.lakecountyil.gov if you think you are being over assessed because you:

  • Recently purchased your property for less than your assessed value
  • Have a recent appraisal for less than your assessed value
  • Are being assessed at a higher amount than comparable properties in your area

Step 3

The process to appeal your assessment is set by state law...and it is CONFUSING. We can help!  You can call your township assessor with questions about your property assessment.

  • Ela Township Assessor (847) 438-8370
  • Libertyville Township Assessor (847) 362-5900
  • Vernon Township Assessor (847) 634-4602

Step 4

You can get free, one-on-one assistance at one of our Help Centers in Vernon Hills or Grayslake. Lake County Assessment staff will help you review your assessment, decide if you would like to file an appeal and can even help you with the paperwork.

These centers are open from 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. The dates and locations are:

Aug. 18 and 25 and Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 22
College of Lake County Southlake Educational Center, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave, Vernon Hills

Aug. 15, 19, 22, 26, 27, Sept. 2, 9, 12, 16 and 24
University Center of Lake County, 1200 University Center Drive, Grayslake

Step 5

If you choose to file an appeal, you can submit the forms online, in person or by mail.

We also want to make it easy for you to attend your Board of Review hearing. You can choose to participate by phone, in person or just by submitting your appeal in writing. More “Need to Know” information is on the Board of Review tab at assessor.lakecountyil.gov
