POLICE APPREHEND BICYCLE THIEVES WITH POWER SAW
The Evanston Police Department’s detective bureau in response to a recent uptick of reported bicycle thefts, conducted a surveillance operation targeting the downtown business district this past weekend. Detectives working in civilian dressed attire observed two individuals casing bicycle racks in the area of Church St. and Benson Ave. on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at approximately 2:15PM.
Detectives continued surveillance on the two subjects and observed one subject use a battery operated power saw with a rotary blade that was removed from his backpack to cut a lock that was securing a Diamondback Mountain bicycle to a rack on the corner of Maple St. and Clark St. After cutting the lock, the subject then began to ride away on the bicycle. Detectives then quickly approached with the assistance of other officers assigned to the operation and apprehended the offender after a brief foot chase. Detectives also apprehended the second individual that was seen partnering with the first subject during the operation.
Detectives determined that the two offenders were acting together, one subject would pick out a desired high end bicycle seen locked to an object and the other would approach and cut the lock. Police recovered a saw, battery packs and cutting blades (photo attached) from the offenders. Analysis of previous bicycle thefts reported to police indicate that these offenders may be responsible for more than two dozen bicycles being taken in Evanston.
The offenders have been identified as Keith Freedman, age 47 and Albert Sauls, age 43 both of Chicago. Both Freedman and Sauls have been criminally charged in this incident. Arrest photos have been attached to this media release for legitimate media publications only.
