EVANSTON POLICE ARREST 16 YEAR OLD WITH A GUN AFTER FOOT CHASE

Evanston Police Tactical Unit Officers assigned to a designated deployment area patrol on July 11, 2013, observed a known subject creating a traffic issue while operating a bicycle in the roadway and interfering with vehicles in the 2000 block of Emerson St. at approximately 2:30PM. When officers attempted to conduct an investigative stop on the subject, the subject fled off the bicycle on foot. Officers pursued the subject and observed the subject reach into his waistband and discard a firearm.

Police subsequently recovered a loaded .22 caliber handgun in the 1800 block Hovland Ct. and were able to place the subject into custody in the 1800 block of Brown Ave. The subject was identified as a 16 year old male Evanston resident. No further information regarding the offender’s identification can be disseminated due to the age of the arrestee.

The 16 year old was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons, a class 4 felony and several other misdemeanor weapons offenses for possessing the loaded firearm. The juvenile will be required to appear in Juvenile Court at 1100 S. Hamilton St. in Chicago. The juvenile was detained in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center as a result of this arrest.

This arrest is a direct result of the Evanston Police Department’s strategy of an enhanced police presence and use of investigative stops, also sometimes referred to as “Stop & Frisk” to reduce crimes of violence and persons illegally possessing firearms that pose a threat to the community.
