Second Suspect Charged in Howard Street Shooting Investigation
EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Police Department has charged a second individual in connection with the shooting investigation that occurred near Howard Street and Custer Avenue.
On April 21, 2026, at approximately 6:08 p.m., officers responded to emergency calls reporting gunshots in the 700 block of Howard Street. Upon arrival, officers located evidence of gunfire inside a local business. Shortly after, officers located a victim with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds near Main Street and Elmwood Avenue. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Since the incident, members of the Evanston Police Department Detective Bureau have continued conducting extensive follow-up investigation, including the review of surveillance video, witness statements, physical evidence, and other investigative leads.
On May 14, 2026, while conducting follow-up investigative activity related to this ongoing case, detectives located 19-year-old Cajmere T. Lemond walking near the 500 block of Custer Avenue in Evanston. Detectives had previously developed probable cause to arrest Lemond in connection with the April 21 shooting investigation.
As detectives attempted to make contact with Lemond, he fled on foot through a nearby residential area. Following a brief foot pursuit, detectives took Lemond into custody without further incident in the rear of the 600 block of Hull Terrace.
During the investigation, detectives recovered two loaded firearms from a backpack in Lemond’s possession, including: • A Taurus G2C 9mm handgun with an extended magazine • An AA Arms P-9 handgun with an extended magazine

A subsequent LEADS inquiry revealed that one of the recovered firearms had previously been reported stolen out of Steubenville, Ohio.
