Suspect Charged in Howard Street Shooting Investigation
 EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Police Department has charged one person in connection with a shooting that occurred near Howard Street and Custer Avenue.
On April 21, 2026, at approximately 6:08 p.m., officers responded to emergency calls reporting gunshots in the 700 block of Howard Street. Upon arrival, officers located evidence of gunfire inside a local business. Shortly after, officers located a victim with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds near Main Street and Elmwood Avenue. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Evidence technicians processed several related scenes and recovered physical evidence. Detectives reviewed video, witness statements, and collected evidence as part of this investigation.
On April 29, 2026, Evanston detectives located and arrested 18-year-old Arthur Mitchell Jr., an Evanston resident, in the 2100 block of Church Street in connection with this ongoing investigation. The case was reviewed by a Cook County State’s Attorney, and two felony charges were approved.

Mitchell is scheduled to appear before a judge at the Skokie Courthouse, located at 5600 Old Orchard Road in Skokie, Illinois, on May 1, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.
