EVANSTON, IL - The City announces the retirement of Evanston Fire Chief Paul Polep, who concludes a distinguished career of nearly 30 years in public service for the Evanston Fire Department. Fire Chief Polep's last day with the City is on May 21, 2026.
“I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to Chief Polep for his decades of dedication, leadership, and service to the Evanston community, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” said City Manager Luke Stowe.
Chief Polep began his service with the Evanston Fire Department on September 16, 1996, as a firefighter/paramedic. Over the course of his career, he steadily rose through the ranks, being promoted to Captain in November 2007, Division Chief in November 2015, Deputy Chief in February 2019, and eventually being appointed Fire Chief in April 2021.
With over 14 State Fire Marshal certifications, including Chief Fire Officer, Chief Polep has played a pivotal role in advancing the department’s capabilities and strengthening emergency response services for the community. His leadership has been instrumental in several key initiatives, including the implementation of a third ambulance to improve response times, the addition of a critical tower truck to enhance firefighting and rescue operations, and the transformation of lakefront safety operations in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department. He also helped maintain the department’s prestigious ISO Class 1 rating, a distinction that reflects the highest level of fire protection services. Lastly, his leadership, in collaboration with all City Departments, City Council, and Local 742, has been instrumental in several key initiatives.
Additional accomplishments include:
- Created Field Chief roles for EMS and Special Operations to strengthen leadership and oversight.
- Deployed an All-Hazards Squad at Fire Station 1 with highly trained personnel.
- Upgraded technology with new applications, software, and equipment to improve operations.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to my fellow members and the community for its support throughout the years,” said Chief Polep.
