Evanston Police Investigate Shooting at Mason Park
EVANSTON, IL - At approximately 12:15 p.m., Evanston Police responded to Mason Park, near Church Street and Florence Avenue, following reports of gunfire. Witnesses reported seeing several individuals flee the area on foot.
Because of the park’s close proximity to Evanston Township High School, the school was placed on a soft lockdown as a precaution. Other District 65 schools and a nearby private preschool were also notified. All lockdowns have since been lifted.
After reviewing available video footage, detectives determined that two small groups exchanged gunfire in the park before fleeing on foot. At this time, there are no confirmed victims or reported injuries.
Evanston Police recovered multiple shell casings from the park. Detectives are reviewing evidence as the investigation continues.
As a precaution, Evanston Police will increase patrols during school arrival and dismissal times for the rest of the week.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Evanston Police Department at 847-866-5000. Tips can also be submitted by text by sending EPDTIP to 274637.
