A Message About Measles
On Tuesday, a measles case in Cook County was reported. This is the first case in Cook County for 2026; however, there have been three other measles cases in Illinois so far this year. There are no known cases or exposure locations in Evanston at this time. Please see the Cook County press release for additional details about this case.
As of March 26, there have been 1,575 cases of confirmed measles reported in the United States this year. This is already almost 70% of the total number of cases reported in all of 2025, a record-setting year when 2,285 measles cases were reported.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that causes rash and high fever. It is spread through the air as well as respiratory droplets. Complications include hospitalization, pneumonia, and brain damage. But measles is preventable! This is a good time for all residents to locate their vaccination records and ensure they are up-to-date on their measles vaccine (MMR). Please reach out with any questions to your healthcare provider or the Evanston Health and Human Services Department at 847-448-4311.
