Sometimes we forget how hard our hearts work for us every single day. This February, during Heart Health Month, let’s show our hearts some love by taking meaningful steps toward a stronger, healthier you.
-
Get your heart pumping—dance, walk, or aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days of the week.
-
Reduce stress by setting aside time to recharge—try deep breathing, journaling, or simply unplugging.
-
Schedule regular health screenings, including blood pressure and cholesterol checks.
Small changes add up. The steps you take today can protect your heart for years to come.
Human Services Division
Come Cook for happy, healthy hearts!
In the spirit of Heart Health Month and making small changes to show your heart some love, join us for a FREE Heart-Healthy Cooking Class! The menu is simply delicious, and you’ll learn how to prepare flavorful, heart-smart dishes—including a healthier spin on a brownie—with Chef Sofia Martin.
Space is limited, so registration is required. Once you receive a “seat confirmation” email from ksmith@cityofevanston.org, your spot is officially reserved. If the class fills up, you’ll be placed on a waitlist and contacted about the next available session.

 Environmental Health Unit
Take a look at what Environmental Health has been up to:
The Environmental Health Unit is proud to close out another impactful year in 2025! From completing inspections for nearly 400 licensed food establishments across Evanston to hosting a successful COVID-19 and flu vaccination clinic that served more than 100 residents, our small but dedicated team continues working every day to keep our community safe and healthy. Looking ahead, HHS will participate in the In Like a Lion Starcom Communications Drill in March 2026, partnering with regional hospitals and health departments to strengthen emergency preparedness and ensure we’re ready when it matters most.
Keep a lookout for more vaccination clinic times and locations!

Childhood vaccination schedule
In early January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) removed several childhood vaccines from the recommended schedule without following the established process. However, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Evanston Health and Human Services Department continue to support the full immunization schedule, which is evidence-based and supported by professional groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics. Importantly, all vaccines recommended by IDPH will be covered by insurance, and there will be no change to the vaccination requirements for schools or daycare in Illinois. Talk with your pediatrician to see what vaccines your child should receive.
Help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses
After being at a high level around the New Year, the respiratory illness level (primarily influenza, COVID, and RSV) has decreased and is now at a low level statewide. However, respiratory illnesses are likely to remain elevated for weeks, and some seasons, including last year’s, include a second wave of illness in February or March.
Here are a few reminders on how to stay healthy during times of increased respiratory illness.
-
Get vaccinated for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV if you are eligible. See the State’s full recommendations-- it is not too late to receive a vaccine for this season!
-
Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
-
Clean high-touch surfaces regularly.
-
Cover coughs and sneezes.
-
Strive for better ventilation.
-
Stay home when sick with respiratory symptoms. You can go back to your normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both are true: 1) Your symptoms are getting better overall, and 2) You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication).
Ongoing Initiative:
Get condoms, lubricant, dental dams, STI & HIV Risk Reduction, and more! Every 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Evanston Public Library from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
