Good afternoon,
Read below for extreme cold-weather updates and information about warming centers, indoor weekend events, summer camp registration, and more!
Extreme Cold Advisory: Stay safe this weekend!
The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory through Saturday night for the Chicagoland area. Community members in need are encouraged to visit City warming centers. The Skokie Courthouse, located at 5600 Old Orchard Rd., is also available 24/7 as a warming center.
311 Center hours: The 311 Center will open tomorrow, Fri., Jan. 23, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In anticipation of a snow event, the 311 Center will also open on Sun., Jan. 25, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Staff will adjust hours as needed.
Recycling collection delays: The City will postpone all recycling collection until Sat., Jan. 24, to ensure employee safety. On Saturday, crews will prioritize collecting the Thursday residential routes and will make every effort to also service condominium properties.
Residential refuse collection: LRS is currently scheduled to proceed with refuse collections as normal. However, because extremely cold temperatures can impact both staff safety and vehicle operations, LRS will closely monitor conditions and adjust operations as needed.
Evanston Public Library hours: Both the Main and Robert Crown Library Branches will have a delayed opening at 1 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 23.
Collector’s & City Clerk's Offices: The Collector’s Office and the City Clerk’s Office will be open from Noon to 4 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 23
School District 65 and District 202 have both announced a virtual school day on Friday.
Tips for staying warm:
- Dress in warm, loose layers with a hat, scarf, and mittens.
- Cover exposed skin; frostbite can happen quickly.
- Limit time outdoors and take frequent indoor breaks.
- Prep your home: insulate pipes, test smoke/CO detectors, and use generators outdoors only.
- Check on neighbors in need; call 311 for assistance.
- Limit pets' time outdoors
