 Celebrate MLK Jr. Day in Evanston
The City has announced changes in service delivery and facility schedules in recognition of the MLK Jr. Day holiday on Mon., Jan. 19.
Enjoy music and art: The City will host its annual MLK Day celebration honoring young civil rights activists on January 17 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre. The celebration will feature youth performances from the Evanston community and a keynote address.
Participate in a day of service: The Evanston Public Library is hosting service events for all ages. Help create reusable sanitary pads for the Girls 4 Girls Ghana organization.
Walk for Warmth: Interfaith Action of Evanston will host their annual Walk for Warmth on January 19 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. This family-friendly walk raises funds for an overnight shelter and includes a short program honoring Dr. King's legacy.

 Evanston hits the data mark!
The City has been awarded a Silver-level Bloomberg Philanthropies What Works Cities Certification, recognizing our strong use of data to inform policy, allocate funding, improve services, and engage residents. The certification reflects our commitment to data-driven decision-making and innovation in city governance.
 Housing4All Plan update now available
Evanston has released an update to its Housing4All Plan, the City’s first dedicated housing strategy. The update reflects community input and guidance from the Housing and Community Development Committee (HCDC) and focuses on preventing displacement, preserving affordable housing, and creating new housing through key initiatives. Learn more.
Public Comment: The HCDC will discuss the update on Tues., Jan. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers (909 Davis St.) and online via Zoom. Public comment is welcome in advance or in person at the meeting.
 Register for the Summer Youth Job Fair
Are you a student looking for summer employment? Youth ages 14 to 18 can find positions with the City, local organizations, and businesses through the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program. Register today for the Job Fair on February 28 at the Robert Crown Center.
Are you an employer interested in hiring Evanston youth? The City is encouraging local businesses to participate in the program. Interested employers must complete the 2026 MSYEP Job Request Form.

Interested in the fire service?
If you’re 14–20 years old, join the Evanston Fire Department's Fire Explorer Program informational meeting and new member registration on Wed., Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. at 909 Lake St. The program introduces participants to careers in the fire services with hands-on training in firefighting and EMS.
Sign up for ComEd's new Low-Income Discount Program
ComEd launched its new Low-Income Discount program on January 1, offering tiered discounts on electric bills for households up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Level to help manage rising energy costs, with larger savings for lower incomes. LIHEAP/PIPP recipients will be automatically enrolled, while others can sign up via Community Action Agencies or online.
Save the date for early voting
Early voting for the March 17 Primary Election will take place March 2-16 in Room B/C of the Robert Crown Community Center. The election will include nominees for federal, state, and county offices. This election is notable for several open seats, including the U.S. Senate and the 9th Congressional District. More info.
