Evanston Police Warn Residents of Pickpocket-Style Thefts
EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Police Department is warning residents about pickpocket-style thefts and reminding the public to take steps to protect personal property while shopping, dining out, or using public transportation.
Pickpocket-style thefts can occur year-round. Thieves look for opportunities anywhere, but incidents are more common in crowded locations such as grocery stores, restaurants, and public transportation. Thieves often target the elderly because they may perceive them as more vulnerable or easier to distract. Often, thieves quickly use stolen credit cards before victims realize their wallets or purses are missing.
Police said residents can greatly reduce the risk of becoming a victim by following these safety tips:
-
Stay aware of your surroundings. Pickpockets rely on distraction. Remain alert in crowded areas, including grocery stores, restaurants, shopping districts, and public transportation.
-
Be aware of common distraction tactics. Thieves may bump into someone, strike up a conversation or use other methods to divert attention.
-
Keep valuables secure and in front. Use front pants pockets, crossbody bags, or bags with zippers to make it harder for thieves to access belongings unnoticed.
-
Do not leave purses in shopping carts. Placing a purse in a cart while browsing shelves can give a thief the opportunity they need.
-
Limit what you carry. Carry only essential cards, cash, and identification.
-
Secure personal items when sitting. Avoid hanging purses or bags on the backs of chairs. Keep them against your body or loop straps around a leg.
Anyone who becomes a victim of theft should immediately report stolen credit or debit cards to their bank and file a police report.
Residents in Evanston can report thefts by calling 847-866-5000. Anyone with information about individuals involved in pickpocket-style thefts is asked to contact police at the same number or submit an anonymous tip by texting CRIMES (274637) and starting the message with EPDTIP.
