Deputy Chief William “Bill” Muno Announces Retirement After 39 Years of Dedicated Service
 EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Fire Department proudly announces the upcoming retirement of Deputy Chief William (Bill) Muno, effective November 21, 2025, after an extraordinary 39-year career serving the residents of the City of Evanston.
Deputy Chief Muno joined the Evanston Fire Department on August 18, 1986, beginning his career as a firefighter earning $9.80 per hour. His commitment to public service, steady leadership, and deep dedication to the community propelled him through the ranks:

Firefighter – Hired August 18, 1986

Captain – Promoted August 19, 1996

Shift Chief – Promoted February 27, 2012

Deputy Chief – Promoted May 10, 2021
Over nearly four decades, Deputy Chief Muno has become a trusted leader and a pillar within the department. Known for his tireless work ethic and unwavering loyalty, he has continually gone above and beyond, including countless hours spent off-duty, to improve department operations, and enhance service delivery for the Evanston community.
Throughout his career, Deputy Chief Muno oversaw major department initiatives and mentored countless firefighters and officers. His leadership during complex emergency responses, dedication to training and professional development, and focus on operational readiness have helped position the Evanston Fire Department as one of the premier agencies in the state.
“Deputy Chief Muno has been an anchor for our department,” said Evanston Fire Chief Paul Polep. “His steady presence, leadership, and commitment to excellence have shaped the Evanston Fire Department for generations. Bill devoted his career to making this department the best it can be, always prioritizing our members, our mission, and the safety of our residents. While he will be deeply missed, his impact and legacy will continue to live on in the EFD.”
A reception and walk-out ceremony will be held at Fire Department Headquarters 909 Lake St., on November 21 from noon until 5 p.m., with a Walk Out Ceremony at 3 p.m. to honor Deputy Chief Muno and celebrate his distinguished career.
The Evanston Fire Department thanks Deputy Chief Bill Muno for his nearly four decades of courageous service, leadership, and devotion to the Evanston community. We wish him a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement.
