Good afternoon,
There will be no 5th Ward meeting this evening. We will resume our regular schedule with the next meeting on the last Thursday of August.
We’re using this time to continue planning for a more robust in-person meeting, which will include a remote option for those who need it. The upcoming meeting will feature guest speakers, food, and other additions—and we’re taking a little extra time to ensure everything is well organized.
Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to seeing you next month!
Best,
Councilmember Bobby Burns 5th Ward, City of Evanston
Church Street Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvement Project Meeting
Please join me for a Joint 2nd & 5th Ward Virtual Meeting to discuss the Church Street Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvement Project. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 2, at 7 p.m.
Please register in advance to attend this meeting.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
Project Information
The project includes pedestrian crossing improvements and protected bike lanes on the south side of Church Street from Dodge Avenue to the west City limits, and a new traffic signal installation at the Church Street/Pitner Avenue intersection. The project also proposes a shared-use path on the east side of the Channel from Church Street to Dempster Street, which includes an underpass beneath Dempster Street to connect to the Harbert Park path system.
The City has received grant funding of $3 million from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) and $1.4 million from the Local Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP-L) for construction. It has been coordinating the project with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for their review and approval of the Phase I Preliminary Engineering, as Church Street is under IDOT jurisdiction and the funding requirements.
At the joint ward meeting, the City and the consultant will present more detailed information regarding the project and also the expected timeline to complete the Phase II Engineering Design and Phase III Construction.
Big changes are coming to Beck Park!
Starting August 2025, the City will begin a yearlong improvement project at Beck Park, located east of the North Shore Channel between Church and Emerson Streets. Planned upgrades include:
- New playgrounds
- Walking and biking paths
- Redesigned parking lot
- Pavilion and site furnishings
- Upgraded lighting and infrastructure
- Refreshed landscaping
During construction, portions of the park will be closed to the public. We appreciate your patience as we work to make Beck Park a more beautiful and accessible space for everyone!
