 EVANSTON, IL - The City of Evanston announces service and facility schedules for the Independence Day holiday, Friday, July 4.
Refuse Collection
Normal collections will occur Thursday, July 3 and Saturday, July 5. No collections will occur Friday, July 4. After Thursday, all collections will be a day behind.
Facilities
The Morton City Hall and all City community centers (except Gibbs-Morrison), recreation facilities, and Evanston Public Library locations will be closed on Friday, July 4. The fields at the Robert Crown Community Center will be open on July 4 for morning games and activities from 9 a.m. to noon.
311 Center
Evanston’s 311 Center will be open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, July 4. Hours will be extended as needed.
Beaches
Evanston beaches, including Greenwood, Lighthouse, Lee Street, and South Boulevard, will be open for swimming on Friday, July 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Clark Street Beach will be closed on July 4 for the fireworks display setup and show.
The Evanston Dog Beach will open from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on July 4.
The Church Street Boat Launch will close to traffic at 2 p.m. on July 4 and reopen after the fireworks show.
Parking
Parking meters/pay boxes and downtown parking garages will be free on Friday, July 4. In addition, other restricted areas that have signs that prohibit parking except on holidays will be honored.
Independence Day Celebration
The Evanston Fourth of July Association will host their annual celebration, including morning games, a Kids' Fun Run, a parade at 2 p.m. on Central Street, a concert by the Palatine Concert Band, fireworks at the lakefront, and more! View a complete listing of Independence Day festivities.
Cooling Center & Heat Safety Tips
The National Weather Service is predicting a high near 90 degrees on Friday, July 4. As a result, the Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center, located at 1823 Church St., will remain open as a cooling center from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Check out a few heat-related safety tips to ensure a safe holiday weekend:

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you.

Stay cool: Take frequent breaks in shaded areas, limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat, and use fans or air conditioning.

Protect yourself from the sun: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Wear lightweight clothing, a hat, and sunglasses.

Parking: Free parking will be available in downtown Evanston's public parking garages. Visit cityofevanston.org/residents/parking/lots-and-garages for locations and more information.
Traffic and safety updates: Updates regarding traffic, parking, and more can be found on the Evanston Police Department's X account @EvanstonPD. Please report any suspicious activities that can cause harm to others by calling 911.
Firework safety: The use of fireworks is illegal in Evanston, including sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets, and Roman candles. Unauthorized fireworks pose serious risks of injury, fire, and noise disturbances, especially for children, pets, and veterans. Evanston Police will be enforcing laws prohibiting fireworks. Community members may report illegal fireworks by calling 847-866-5000 (police non-emergency line).
