EVANSTON, IL - Mayor Daniel Biss, 9th Ward Councilmember Juan Geracaris, and 4th Ward Councilmember Jonathan Nieuwsma will be available to provide information to the public regarding the proposed Evanston Health Data Protection Ordinance. The City Council is scheduled to vote on this ordinance during its June 23, 2025, meeting.
Mayor Biss, along with Councilmembers Geracaris and Nieuwsma, will be available to answer questions on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 4 p.m. prior to the referrals committee meeting at Morton City Hall, located at 909 Davis Street in the Council Chambers.
Evanston’s proposed Health Data Protection Ordinance will prevent the City from sharing sensitive health information that could obstruct access to healthcare protected under Illinois law, including reproductive and gender-affirming care.
Key points will include:
- Evanston’s Health Data Protection Ordinance will prevent sharing sensitive health information that could limit access to protected healthcare.
- The City will not share information with data brokers if they plan to pass it on to jurisdictions enforcing laws against reproductive or gender-affirming care. Data brokers may certify that they will not share information for prohibited purposes.
- The City will not enforce any law restricting bodily autonomy if it conflicts with Illinois law. It will not arrest or transfer individuals solely for violating such laws unless the act is criminal under Illinois law.
- The Evanston Department of Health and 311 will offer resources for reproductive and gender-affirming health care, including language support and caller privacy.
- Exceptions to information-sharing limitations include obligations from law, valid court orders, or warrants signed by a judge.
