CHICAGO — The Cook County Board of Commissioners has passed a resolution honoring Evanston Police Chief Schenita Stewart for her groundbreaking service and ongoing contributions to public safety in Illinois.
Chief Stewart, a native of Evanston, returned to her hometown in fall 2022 to become the city’s first permanent female chief of police. Her appointment marked a significant milestone in the department's 160-year history and capped a steady rise through the ranks of law enforcement that began in Lincolnwood and continued in East Dundee.
The resolution commends Stewart for her commitment to public service, community engagement, and leadership. It also recognizes her most recent honor as the 2025 Police Chief of the Year, awarded by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
“We’re incredibly proud of Chief Stewart and thankful to the Cook County Board of Commissioners for recognizing her accomplishments,” said City Manager Luke Stowe. “Having her come back to lead the department in her hometown is a full-circle moment that truly shows her dedication to public service.”
Since taking the helm in Evanston, Stewart has led initiatives to build community trust, reduce crime, and strengthen officer wellness and accountability. Her leadership during times of transition and public safety challenges has drawn praise from both local officials and state organizations.
The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police will formally present the 2025 award at its upcoming spring conference.
