Update 2: Robert Crown Repairs Progress
EVANSTON, IL - The two ice sheets at the Robert Crown Community Center, located at 1801 Main Street, remain closed due to an unexpected mechanical failure. This issue arose during routine maintenance performed by an outside vendor, which led to the loss of both ice sheets. As a result, it made it impossible to maintain the necessary freezing temperatures for the ice.
Technicians continue to diligently work and assess to ensure that repairs are completed on the refrigeration system critical for maintaining the optimal temperature of the ice slabs. This system is primarily powered by three compressors, which are currently undergoing extensive repairs to restore their functionality.
Additionally, parts have been successfully installed on compressors #1 and #3. Furthermore, this week, the technicians will start the system and conduct the necessary monitoring to ensure it operates correctly and maintains the appropriate temperatures.
The technicians have identified the need for additional parts for compressor #2, and have placed orders accordingly. They are currently awaiting the arrival of these essential components, which are vital for the repair process.
If everything proceeds as planned, the goal is to begin preparing the ice for the first rink, with an anticipated completion date of late March. The second sheet of ice is anticipated to be completed during the first week of April, assuming no complications arise.
The Parks and Recreation Department and an external vendor are actively working to complete the necessary repairs as swiftly as possible, ensuring the ice sheets are ready for public use and that programming can commence in a timely manner.
