Melrose Park Man Arrested for UPW
EVANSTON, IL - On February 5, approximately 1:50 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a white Hyundai in the 2300 block of Main Street after observing the vehicle operating without headlights. The driver, identified as Anthony Tellez, was informed of the violation. During the officer’s initial conversation with Tellez, the officer asked Tellez if there were any weapons in the vehicle. Tellez stated there was a handgun in the vehicle but that he possessed a Concealed Carry License (CCL).
During the stop, officers observed a THC smoking device. The officers also learned that Tellez did not have a CCL. Based on the officers’ observation and Tellez stating he had a firearm, Tellez and his passenger were instructed to exit the vehicle. Officers continued their investigation, which included a search of the vehicle, and recovered a loaded Smith and Wesson .45-caliber handgun. Additionally, cannabis and suspected psilocybin were recovered during the investigation.
Tellez was placed under arrest and transported to the station. Once at the station, Tellez admitted to possessing the firearm, the cannabis weighing approximately 39 grams, and psilocybin weighing approximately 63 grams. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the investigation and approved one felony count of Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Tellez was also charged with drug offenses and cited for several traffic violations.
The passenger was detained but was released without charges, and the vehicle was towed.
