South End Community Center Renamed in Honor of Dr. Jorge and Luz Maria Prieto
The Evanston City Council has voted to rename the South End Community Center in honor of Dr. Jorge and Luz Maria Prieto, recognizing their lifelong commitment to community service, social justice, and healthcare advocacy. The center, located at 430 Asbury Ave., will now be known as the Dr. Jorge and Luz Maria Prieto Community Center (or the Prieto Community Center for short)—marking the first city facility in Evanston named after Latino community members.
Ninth Ward Council Member Juan Geracaris, the city’s first Latino council member, championed the renaming effort, presenting a petition with strong community support.
The City of Evanston will host a dedication ceremony for the newly renamed center in the coming months. Community members will be invited to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Jorge and Luz Maria Prieto and their enduring impact on the city. Details of the event will be announced soon.
The Evanston Dog Beach is open. Using the Dog Beach is at your own risk and requires extra caution, especially during the winter months.
Dog Beach closure and reopening updates will be provided through the Dog Beach e-newsletter and the online beach status webpage.
