Evanston Fire Department Now Hiring Lifeguards for Summer 2025
 EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Fire Department (EFD) is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join its lifeguard team for the 2025 summer season. Applications are now open.
Evanston lifeguards play a vital role in keeping the City’s five public swimming beaches safe. They collaborate with first responders to monitor for hazards, provide first aid, and respond swiftly to emergencies and rescues, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all beach visitors.
“Protecting the health and safety of all community members and visitors is our top priority,” said Fire Chief Paul Polep. “Lifeguards working under the Evanston Fire Department umbrella enhance our City’s coordination, response, and training for lakefront incidents while at the same time adding value to the job experience for our lifeguards.”
How to apply
Those interested in becoming an Evanston Fire Department summer lifeguard are encouraged to complete the online application.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and able to obtain Red Cross Lifeguard certification. While previous lifeguard experience is beneficial, it is not required. Evanston residency is also not required.

The Academy for returning lifeguards will tentatively take place from May 19 to June 6, 2025.

Pay and benefits
Lifeguards earn $18.50 per hour in their first season, $19.50 per hour in their second, and $20.50 per hour in their third.
Those interested in a career in fire and life safety will gain invaluable hands-on experience as part of the Evanston Fire Department, a nationally recognized Class 1-rated agency. This prestigious designation from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) places EFD among the top 1% of fire departments nationwide.

Evanston beaches will be open for swimming from Saturday, May 24, through Monday, September 1.
