Norovirus is on the rise
Norovirus is on the rise nationwide, including in Evanston. The virus, often called the "24-hour stomach bug," causes vomiting and diarrhea. Most people recover within 1-3 days, however, if a person experiences signs of dehydration (e.g., dizziness, decreased urine output, or unusual sleepiness) they should seek medical attention.
The virus can be spread via direct contact with an ill person, food or beverages, and touching contaminated surfaces. Frequent and thorough handwashing—with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds—is critical to prevent norovirus as alcohol-based hand sanitizer is not effective.
Those who are ill with vomiting and diarrhea should stay home for at least 24 hours after symptoms have stopped (48 hours for those who work in sensitive occupations, like food handlers and healthcare workers). For additional information, review the CDC's norovirus resources, call 847-448-4311, or simply dial 311 while in Evanston to speak with someone from the Health and Human Services Department.

Evanston is one of just 18 grant recipients nationwide, securing the highest amount in the program despite being one of the smallest jurisdictions.
