Evanston, IL – At approximately 11:38 PM on November 29, 2024, the Evanston Fire Department responded to a reported fire at 711 Howard Street, the location of Good to Go Jamaican Restaurant. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke emanating from the building, with multiple individuals already outside the premises.
Firefighters quickly entered the structure to investigate and discovered heavy fire activity in the kitchen hood and ductwork. Crews initiated interior firefighting operations, including pulling the ceiling and ventilating the roof, to expose and suppress the fire effectively.
Due to the adverse weather conditions and the fire's location, the incident was escalated to a second alarm under the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), which brought in assistance from neighboring fire departments and ensured city-wide coverage during the event.
The fire was extinguished shortly after the escalation, and no injuries to civilians or firefighters have been reported.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The Evanston Fire Department would like to thank the mutual aid departments and the community for their cooperation during this incident.
Further updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
