Read below for information about the end of the beach swimming season, the first-ever Evanston Folk Festival, how to apply to receive a free bike, and more!
 Evanston beaches are closed to swimming
It's time to "wave" goodbye to the summer beach season. City beaches are closed to swimming for the remainder of 2024, as no lifeguards are on duty. The sand area will remain open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
A few items to note: The Clark and Dempster St. Beach Offices are now closed for the season. The Dempster St. and Church St. Boat Launches will remain open but will be unstaffed through October 23. For lakefront park picnic permits, please call 847-448-8256.
Safety reminders: Lake Michigan can be dangerous, and swimming is prohibited during the off-season. In case of emergency, call 911.
 The Evanston Folk Festival is almost here 🪕
The first-ever Evanston Folk Festival, hosted by SPACE, is this weekend, and we couldn’t be more excited! If you haven’t grabbed your tickets to attend a concert yet, head to evanstonfolkfestival.com.
Timeline:
- Sept. 6: Sheridan Rd. (Greenwood to Church) will be closed for setup.
- Sept. 7 & 8: Sheridan Rd. will remain closed. Fest hours: 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- Sept. 9: Sheridan Rd. will reopen and all equipment will be removed.
Safety: Evanston Police and private security contractors will be on-site all weekend. There will be a full perimeter fence and ticketed entry.
Traffic: Forest Avenue will remain open throughout the event, but a portion of Sheridan Road, from Greenwood to Church, will be closed.

 Bicycle Access Voucher Pilot: Apply today! 🚲
The City has launched its Bicycle Access Voucher Pilot Program to provide income-qualified residents with vouchers for bicycles, e-bikes, adaptive bicycles, accessories, and maintenance. Supported by $75,000 from the NU Good Neighbor Fund, the program aims to promote sustainable transportation and reduce car travel, aligning with the City's CARP goals.
Program highlights: Eligible residents can apply for vouchers through September 23, with amounts ranging from $750 for standard bikes to $4,000 for e-bikes or adaptive bikes.

 Join the back-to-school party tonight!
Celebrate the back-to-school season at the 'Kits, 'Cats and Kids Block Party tonight, Sept. 5, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event will be held adjacent to ETHS's Lazier Field, at Church Street and Hartrey Avenue. Mayor Biss and Councilmember Harris will be attending, so make sure to say "Hi".
Free outdoor activities for all ages: Enjoy games, music, the ETHS and NU marching bands, a rousing pep rally, delicious food trucks, and more!

The Envision Evanston 2045 team wants to hear from you!
The City, in partnership with HDR and McAdams, recently held a series of focus groups on topics like Arts & Culture and Equity & Prosperity, to help inform Envision Evanston 2045. If you were unable to participate, share your thoughts through our questionnaire (open through September 19), which includes discussion questions from these sessions.
The Taste of Evanston returns
Taste of Evanston celebrates the city’s most popular food and drink establishments and raises funds to help the housing insecure. Hosted by the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club, the annual event will take place on Sun., Sept. 15, from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m., at the Charles Gates Dawes House.
Sip and stroll for a good cause
Join the Main-Dempster Mile for the Evanston Wine Walk on Thurs., Sept. 12, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Guests will enjoy wine tastings inside almost 40 small businesses, while 100 percent of profits from the event will be donated to a local Evanston non-profit.
Participate in community bike rides
Throughout the summer, Downtown Evanston has partnered with Evanston Transit Alliance and Chicago Family Biking/Evanston Kidical Mass to host two fantastic series of monthly bike rides. These rides will continue through October, so get out and pedal your way to community fun and fitness.
Sign up to receive recycling and waste reduction resources
Evanston is a Solid Waste Agency of Cook County (SWANCC) member community, meaning that residents can take advantage of recycling and waste reduction resources and opportunities in the region. Sign up to receive their monthly e-news.
Save the date for the next Emergency Preparedness Fair
The Fire Department's Office of Emergency Management will host an Emergency Preparedness Fair on Sat., Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Robert Crown Community Center. This free, family-friendly event will help you gather resources and learn how to prepare for an emergency.
House on the move! September 9
On Mon., Sept. 9, ETHS will move a two-story home from 1600 Dodge Ave. to 1319 McDaniel Ave., starting at 9 a.m. The house was built by students in the ETHS 'Geometry in Construction' course. Expect parking restrictions and minor delays along the route.
