Evanston Police Charge Second Offender in August 5 Shooting Incident
EVANSTON, IL - On August 5, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Evanston Police responded to a call reporting two individuals had been shot in the 1700 block of Dempster Street. Upon arrival, officers located two males, aged 41 and 50, both residents of Evanston, who had sustained gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to area hospitals in stable condition.
On August 12, 2024, a second offender, Christopher Davis, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by felon in relation to this incident. On August 5, Davis was stopped by officers driving a Volvo at Darrow Avenue and Dempster Street as he was leaving the area of the shooting. Officers observed a Smith M&P 9mm on the rear driver side floorboard of the Volvo. Davis was detained but released pending further investigation.
The investigation continued as detectives obtained a search warrant for the Volvo. When the search warrant was executed, the handgun was recovered. The investigation revealed that immediately after the shots were fired, Davis was witnessed holding a black handgun, consistent with the one recovered from the Volvo. The investigation indicates that while Davis did not fire the handgun, he was in possession of it in an apparent attempt to take it from the scene.
On August 12, Davis was arrested at the Evanston Police Department. He did not have a Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) Card or a Concealed Carry License (CCL). The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the investigation and approved a felony charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
The investigation into this incident remains active. If you have information, evidence, or video related to this incident, please call 847-866-5040 or Text-A-Tip to CRIMES (274637) and start your message with EPDTIP.
