Chicago Man Charged with Aggravated Discharge in Connection with July 29 Shooting
EVANSTON, IL - On July 29, at approximately 11:00 p.m., officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 1600 block of Foster Street. The investigation revealed that a male subject had fired a handgun three or four times. Officers checked the area but did not locate the offender. Fortunately, there were no gunshot victims, and no one was injured.
The investigation led to the recovery of four .45-caliber shell casings and produced video footage of the offender firing the gun. Once the offender finished firing, it appeared he fled the area on foot. Images of the offender were made available department-wide, and he was identified as Cedric Pitts.
On August 1, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Pitts was located and arrested in the 1900 block of Darrow Avenue. He was transported to the station, where the investigation continued. Pitts did not make a statement admitting to discharging the firearm. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the investigation and approved a felony charge of aggravated discharge of a weapon.
Pitts was on parole for a 2022 weapons charge. Based on this current arrest, the Illinois Department of Corrections issued an arrest warrant for violating the conditions of his parole. The warrant was served while Pitts was in Evanston Police custody.
The firearm used in this incident was not recovered, and the intended target has not been identified. If you have information pertaining to this investigation, please contact the Evanston Police Detective Bureau at (847) 866-5040 or Text-A-Tip to CRIMES (274637) and start your message with EPDTIP.
