Chief Schenita Stewart Issues Statement on the Passing of Retired Chief William H. Logan Jr.
EVANSTON, IL - “It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of former Evanston Police Chief William H. Logan Jr.
Chief Logan was not only the first Black Chief of Police in Evanston, but also a pioneering leader whose legacy will live on.
Chief Logan dedicated his life to public service, demonstrating unwavering commitment, integrity, and leadership throughout his career. He broke barriers and opened doors for many—a door that I walked through 35 years after his retirement.
Under Chief Logan’s leadership, the Evanston Police Department made significant strides in community policing and building community trust. His vision and dedication to fostering positive relationships are reflected in what we do and how we do it every day. As a founding member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), Chief Logan initiated groundbreaking work towards establishing equity within the law enforcement field. Work that still goes on today.
After retiring from the police department, Chief Logan remained a leader as the head of security at Evanston Township High School (ETHS). In this role, he continued to impact lives positively, mentoring students and ensuring their place of learning was a safe one.
Chief Logan's contributions extend far beyond his professional duties. As a mentor, a friend, a family member, and an inspiration for many of the sons and daughters of Evanston's 5th Ward, his impact on our community and the police department is immeasurable. As a founding member of the Fellowship of African American Men (F.A.A.M.), Chief Logan demonstrated what it means to build connections and a legacy. Community was more than a word to him; it was a way of life. His loss will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we mourn the loss of Chief Logan, we also celebrate his remarkable life and legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those touched by his leadership and kindness.”
