Lakefront Safety Tips & Reminders
The City operates five swimming beaches between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Because Lake Michigan can be a dangerous body of water, community members should follow these quick reminders to ensure a safe and fun experience:
-
Only swim when lifeguards are on duty. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty.
-
Follow the Swim Flag Warning System, which follows traffic light rules: 🟥 red = no swimming, 🟨 yellow = use caution, 🟩 green = no restrictions.
-
Free U.S. Coastguard-approved lifejackets are available.
-
Before heading to the beach, check the beach status online at cityofevanston.org/beach.
