Dangerous Heat and Thunderstorms Expected This Afternoon
![Heat Advisory](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/ILEVANSTON/2024/07/9816957/5572409/heat-advisory_crop.jfif) The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for the Evanston area today. Dangerous heat and humidity will build across the region, with afternoon heat indices near 110 possible. More rain and thunderstorms are also expected this afternoon.
City staff ready to respond
Evanston public works crews, forestry staff, 311 and first responders are on alert and prepared to respond to any issues that arise.

Community members are encouraged to take advantage of the public cooling centers listed below, which will be open during the following hours:
- Noyes Cultural Arts Center – 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
- Robert Crown Community Center – 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Fleetwood Jourdain Community Center – 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Levy Senior Center – 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Evanston Public Library – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Tips to Prevent Heat-related Illnesses
Community members are encouraged take the following actions to prevent heat-related illnesses:
- Drink lots of water, and avoid alcohol, caffeine and high salt intake
- Stay in cool, shaded areas while outdoors, and keep the blinds drawn or lights down indoors
- Use air conditioners or fans; avoid excessive exposure to heat in unventilated areas
- Reduce physical activity
- Take cool baths or showers, and use cool towels
- Wear loose, light cotton clothing and a breathable hat
- Eat light meals; avoid eating heavy meals and using the oven
- Do not leave people or pets alone in a hot car, even for a few minutes
- Remember to check in on your neighbors, seniors, and those who may need some extra assistance.
