EVANSTON, IL - Last Sunday, June 30, the Evanston Fire Department responded to a distress call from Lighthouse Beach at approximately 4:00 p.m. Four swimmers were struggling in the water. Prior to the arrival of the Evanston Fire Department, one adult female and two teenage females were rescued by a community member. One of the teenage females was transported to an area hospital, where she was treated and released. A body potentially matching the description of a 41-year-old male, the fourth swimmer who had been missing, has been recovered.
At approximately 6:40 a.m. this morning, the Evanston Fire Department (EFD) was dispatched to investigate a report of a body found in Lake Michigan. The body was discovered by a fishing charter approximately two miles off Dempster Street Beach when they made the discovery.
The fishing charter crew immediately notified the Coast Guard, which then informed the Evanston Fire Department. EFD promptly responded with its boat and successfully recovered the body from the water.
The Evanston Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office are working to confirm the identification of the body recovered. The City will provide further details as they become available.
The City would like to thank our first responders and many external partners who assisted in search operations over the past week.
