EVANSTON, IL - As of 2:30 p.m. today, July 1, the Evanston Fire Department suspended recovery efforts for a missing swimmer after exhausting all areas of search utilizing predictive modeling and diver experience. Lifeguards and Evanston fire personnel will resume surface and shoreline searches tomorrow.
Extensive search efforts have been conducted since yesterday, employing interdivisional Mutual Aid Box Alarm (MABAS) fire and water rescue personnel and equipment. With more than ten outside agencies available to assist in the recovery effort, Evanston personnel are grateful for the support and collaboration offered by neighboring jurisdictions.
Beachgoers are reminded to observe signs and flags attentively, note when lifeguards are not on duty, and exercise caution when enjoying Evanston beaches. A red, yellow, or green flag will be visible at all swimming beaches to indicate daily water conditions. Rip currents are dangerous and not always obvious, so please adhere to beachfront safety guidelines and the flag system to stay safe.
Please visit the City’s Beach Status and Closings website for more information. View the Fire Department’s initial news release.
