Traffic Stop Leads to UUW Charge for Chicago Man
EVANSTON, IL - On June 13, 2024, at approximately 8:19 p.m., an Evanston police officer observed a blue Ford Escape driving in the 2100 block of Dempster that was missing a front license plate and had an obstructed rear license plate. The officer conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Yekeen Erinfolami.
During the routine traffic stop, the officer requested Erinfolami's driver’s license and insurance information. While doing so, the officer noticed a box for a handgun on the vehicle's floorboard. Upon the officer's inquiry, Erinfolami stated he did not possess a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card or a Concealed Carry License (CCL).
Due to Erinfolami's nervous demeanor and the officer’s observations, Erinfolami was asked to step out of the vehicle. A subsequent pat-down search revealed a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P Shield handgun in a cross-body bag worn by Erinfolami. The officer immediately placed Erinfolami into custody and secured the weapon.
While being transported to the police station, Erinfolami stated he believed he could carry a handgun if he had a FOID card. Further investigation confirmed Erinfolami had a FOID card but did not possess a CCL.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved one felony count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. In addition to the felony charge, Erinfolami received two traffic citations related to the initial stop.
