Watch Mayor Biss' State of the City Address
Mayor Daniel Biss delivered his State of the City Address yesterday, May 8, at Evanston SPACE. The recorded speech is available for viewing on the City's YouTube and Channel 16.
The Mayor's address focused on the importance of Evanston taking bold action, especially in today's environment where so many Americans feel that their government is stuck and unable to meet their challenges. He covered similar themes in an op-ed published in the Chicago Tribune.

New C.A.R.E Program to launch mid-summer
Evanston's Crisis Alternative Response Evanston (C.A.R.E.) program, launching mid-summer, is designed to provide a non-police response by Community Responders to certain calls for services deemed lower-risk.
What are Community Responders? The C.A.R.E team will consist of dedicated professionals whose lived experience and training will allow them to respond to a range of community concerns, including well-being checks, nuisance complaints, certain ordinance violations, and mental health crises.
How will I contact the C.A.R.E team? During the initial phase, Community Responders will be available seven days a week from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. and can be contacted by dialing 9-1-1, 847-448-4311, or the Police Non-Emergency Line at 847-866-5000.

A Message About Pertussis
As respiratory illnesses return to pre-pandemic levels, we have seen an increase in pertussis (whooping cough) in Evanston this winter and spring.
Pertussis is caused by a highly contagious bacterium that is found in the fluids of the mouth, nose, and throat of an infected person. When coughing or sneezing, respiratory droplets that are produced can infect others. The first pertussis symptoms often start like a cold with a runny nose, low-grade fever, and mild cough. However, over a week or two, the cough becomes more severe with rapid fits or bursts of coughing (paroxysms). It is often worse at night, exhausting the infected person. Individuals can sometimes turn blue or vomit during these attacks; however, between coughing fits, they appear and feel well.
Anyone can get pertussis. Vaccination can help prevent pertussis and protect against severe disease. Please check with your doctor to ensure you and your family are up-to-date on pertussis-containing vaccinations (DTaP for young children, and Tdap for pre-teens and adults). Pertussis can be successfully treated with antibiotics, but the cough can linger for weeks even after treatment.
If you develop a cough after exposure to pertussis, or if you have a new, persistent cough with an unknown cause that lasts longer than seven days, please call your doctor.
For general questions regarding pertussis, please contact the Health and Human Service Department at 847-448-4311.

Adoptable Pet of the Month: Meowzer!

Meet Meowzer! Meowzer isn't just a cat - she is a personal assistant. She's a big help in the kitchen and the bathroom and loves watching webinars! When she's not busy with those tasks, she basks in the sun with a friend. She's four years old, and although she has become a volunteer favorite at the shelter, she's more than ready to move on to a home of her own.
Interested in meeting Meowzer? Fill out an adoption questionnaire at the Evanston Animal Shelter.
That’s it for today's e-news. Thanks for reading!
