Evanston, IL - The Evanston Parks and Recreation and Evanston Fire Departments have announced two new initiatives to promote water safety and ensure the well-being of beachgoers.
Flag Warning System
The City is set to launch a flag warning system aimed at providing beachgoers with clearer insights into swimming conditions. This new initiative promises improved comprehension and accessibility for all visitors.
Under the new system, lakefront personnel will utilize three distinct flag colors to indicate levels of swimming risk. Each flag will also be outfitted with printed lettering to aid individuals with low vision. These flags will be prominently displayed on the central lifeguard chair at every designated swimming area.
This new flag warning system mirrors the standards set by the Chicago Park District, ensuring consistency in guidance for swimmers frequenting both Evanston and Chicago beaches.
This new system will be used in tandem with the current online beach status website as communication tools for community members. Lakefront staff will continue to update the City’s beach status website daily.
Life Jacket Loaner Program
Beginning Memorial Day weekend, a limited number of life jackets will be available to borrow daily at all swimming beaches, free of charge.
Sizes ranging from infant to adult XL with the appropriate weight restrictions are listed below:
- Infant, 33 lbs. and under
- Child, 33 to 55 lbs.
- Youth, 55 to 89 lbs.
- Adult and Adult XL, 90+ lbs.
Life jackets will be available to borrow only during permitted swimming hours when lifeguards are on duty. Lakefront staff at beach entrances will assist community members seeking to borrow jackets. Life jackets must be returned after each use. No ID is required for use.
By making life jackets easily accessible and free, the City hopes to foster a culture of safety and responsibility among swimmers. As a reminder, swimming is prohibited at all City beaches when no lifeguard is on duty.
“Water safety is of paramount importance, and we believe that making life jackets available to anyone enjoying our beaches is a crucial step towards preventing accidents and promoting responsible water recreation,” said Lakefront and Athletics Division Manager Tim Carter.
