Earth Day is April 22. This year's theme, Planet vs. Plastics, calls to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics and the rapid phase out of all single use plastics.
Check out a few way to celebrate Earth Day in Evanston:
Participate in Earth Day Fest: Celebrate the Evanston Ecology Center's 50th birthday at the City's Earth Day Fest on Sat., April 20, from noon to 3 p.m., at Ingraham Park. Enjoy games, tree plantings, food trucks, earth-friendly resources, and more!
Clean up your neighborhood: Help keep Evanston clean by joining multiple cleanup events throughout the weekend:
 Recycle your electronics and shred documents
Did you know? As Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County members, Evanston residents have access to recycling events in neighboring communities! Don't miss out on these upcoming one-day recycling events where you can drop off electronics and shred documents.
Heads up! This year's "Evanston Recycles" event will take place on July 6 at Evanston Township High School.
 Farmers' market season is around the corner!
The Downtown Evanston Farmers’ Market will kick off its 49th season on Sat., May 4, with over 50 vendors selling everything from fruit to flowers to baked goods. The Market will be open every Saturday through November 4, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at University Place and Oak Avenue.

Purchase a rain barrel to help combat flooding
Spring's frequent heavy rainfalls can result in multiple issues, including flooding. One way to mitigate this is by utilizing rain barrels! Rain barrels are available for purchase through a collaboration with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD). Learn more.
YWCA Unites Against Racism
Join the YWCA Evanston/North Shore for a reimagined Unite Against Racism event, called Unite Against Racism: Practicing Solidarity and Imagining New Futures. The event will be held on Wed., April 24, from 5:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Center. Register to attend.
Shop the Maker's Market in Downtown Evanston
Sell what you make or shop handmade goods at the annual Maker's Market in the Maple Avenue Parking Garage. Markets are scheduled for May 5, August 4, and October 6 from noon to 5 p.m. More info!
Church Street Boat Launch updates
Dredging: The City will be contracting dredging services for the Church Street Boat Launch at 1647 Sheridan Rd. Work is anticipated to begin on Mon., April 22, and be completed by Tues., May 7, weather permitting.
Permits: Permits for the 2024 summer season are now available for power boats, personal motorized watercraft, and large sailboats. Learn more.
