 Construction Updates
It’s that time of year again when the bulldozers, dump trucks, and orange vests come out of hibernation. Here’s what’s happening around the 4th Ward:
Main Street
The final phase of the Main Street Corridor Improvement Project will start in early April and run through late September. After a long wait, we’ll get new sidewalks, new curbs and gutters, a resurfaced road, and streetscape enhancements. Not only will this beautify the business district, it will also boost pedestrian safety and improve traffic flow.
Main Street businesses will be open the whole summer! The construction will be a challenge for them, so please head to Main Street throughout the summer to show the businesses some extra love.
To keep it fun as we start things off, Main-Dempster Mile invites families out for a "Touch a Trunk" event at Train Station Alley on Fri., March 29, from noon to 2 p.m. Kids will enjoy supervised climbs on some of the City's biggest working trucks! Toy hard hats will be given to guests while supplies last.
The project will be completed in three phases:
-
Phase 1: Maple Ave. - Hinman Ave. - North Sidewalk & Streetscape April 1, 2024 – End of June 2024
-
Phase 2: Maple Ave. - Hinman Ave. - South Sidewalk & Streetscape June 17, 2024 – End of July 2024
-
Phase 3: Maple Avenue - Hinman Avenue - Street resurfacing. Grinding Main Street, base replacement, asphalt binder, structure adjustment, final asphalt surface coarse & pavement markings. July 29, 2024 to Mid-August. Street lights, traffic signals & signage will be completed by mid-September 2024.
The actual date when construction is planned will be indicated on temporary “No Parking” signs posted 48 hours in advance. Construction zone “No Parking” will be in effect on sections of Main Street during each construction phase. Street sweeping and residential parking restrictions will be waived for one block in each direction around Main Street, from Maple Avenue to Hinman Avenue.
During construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained on Main Street, depending on the construction phase, and access to the businesses will be maintained at all times. Construction activities will create some inconveniences for the abutting businesses and residents; however, workers will strive to minimize any issues.
If you have any questions or concerns during construction, please contact Resident Engineer Nagi Ahmad at 815-584-6900. General questions about the Main Street Project should be directed to Senior Project Manager Sat Nagar, at 3-1-1 or 847-448-4311.
Sewers
Evanston’s annual routine sewer maintenance work began on Monday and will continue throughout the summer. The first step is cleaning and televising select sections through the city, followed by a lining process which will commence in May.
Several locations in the Fourth Ward are included in this project. Map here, more info here.
The contractor will collaborate with area residents and businesses to minimize impacts and noise. Businesses will receive direct communication prior to lining to coordinate the work. A 10-day notice will be provided to area residents before the lining work begins. An additional notice will be placed on the front doors of the affected buildings, advising the occupants 24 hours in advance of the specific date and time when the sewer lining work will be performed, and the sewer service connection will be sealed. This work should take approximately 10 hours to complete. "No Parking" signs will be posted when rehabilitation work will restrict parking.
Alleys
Alley maintenance in the 4th Ward will start later in April and run into the fall.
Each year Evanston’s more than 300 unpaved alleys are periodically graded by the City. This work is done to eliminate potholes and ruts caused by vehicles, weather and other factors. The process improves travel and reduces puddling.
